Don't panic about a gap in social insurance payments: pensions count cumulative years, and medical insurance can be made up under the rules

In plain words
A pension is calculated on cumulative years, not continuous years. A gap does not reset the count to zero, and once you reach retirement age with 15 cumulative years you can collect a monthly pension. If you have paid employee medical insurance (职工医保) for enough years, you do not have to pay after retirement; the required number of years differs from place to place, so call 12393 and ask the place where you are insured. What a gap really affects is eligibility that requires continuous payment, such as buying a home, getting local household registration, or earning points.
Mentioned in
- If you have no employer and pay into employee pension insurance (职工养老保险) yourself, pay at the lowest tier and make sure you build up enough years; don't treat it as a sure profit, because even at the lowest tier it takes about 10 years of collecting to break even
- When you move to another city for work, transfer your pension and medical insurance to the new place and keep accumulating contribution years; don't withdraw
- Working outside a company is flexible employment: pay for pension and medical insurance yourself where you work, and household registration limits have been lifted
